Satsanghs & Jet-setting grandmas
Hey guys, I have gone back to work at the magazine and this time I don't need to interview beauty queens thank god! But, no pay hike and no bad blood with the bosses either I'm promised. So I'm back to work and my pals there seem impressed that I got my way!
But sitting at home eating humble pie has made me re-evaluate my situation - I was happy with my work and it was a haven from my family who are nosey about everything I do. But now, the tides have changed I'm busy and have a legitimate excuse from being away from home.
But that does not mean that they have not been busy either...Of late my family is being forced to go for satsanghs by a neighbour so my mom and aunts Agatha included are busy spending times at satsanghs! The house is sometimes filled with smell of incense and flowers. A sanyasi comes to lead the satsanghs and they all sit and sing along.
My family has a peculiar nature - if one aunt/uncle does something the whole flock of them swoop in and adopt it themselves. It is a fad and I've immensely enjoyed observing this slant of my family elders. Of course I was really not jumping for joy when I became their latest fad!
The aunts have ditched their printed silks for cotton sarees and except for some simple jewelery they now adorn rudrakshas! I wanted to know if they are ready to go the vanaprastham way! So will you go to the jungles leave your belongings and embark on an adventure for nirvana?
My mom of course taken aback at the question used me as her reason for continuing in the decadence of TV/DVD viewing and Mall-crawling! My aunts were miffed by my query too - They really had no reason but then they said their NRI kids needed them for 6 months for baby-sitting! The cyclical baby-sitting is because their childrens' in-laws take the other six months!
My aunty B has openly admitted to us that she hates it in the US but then as there is no maid-shaid there the grandkids are really lonely! So we have jet-setting grandparents here. Aunty B rarely gets time at home in India as she is called by the next daughter in Australia!
Secretly I believe for aunty B the satsanghs are an escape-route from baby-sitting! My mom goes for entertainment she hates sitting at home but for the most of them it is a means to escape so it's defenitely Jai ho Jai ho Maharaj nowadays in my family these days!
As for me I love all the talk they give to one another to hide their real reasons for going to these dos.
