Couple of weeks ago I made a post called "Swans mate for life but.." I was irked by the insensitive widowers left behind by some great women I knew. The husbands remarried far too early and I still call them snakes and dogs!
But then there is someone who is a swan and has remarried in my family - He is my uncle called the Duracell Bunny by the whole family. Almost all his married life he knew his wife could die any day - she had a congenital heart problem.
But beating odds she gave birth to two boys who became the apple of his eye. Duracell Bunny or DB was a workaholic and went up the corporate ladder to become the President of a company. His temperamental wife was devoted but she was born a queen and he kept her a queen all her life!
She fought to stay alive till she got her boys into professional colleges and suddenly decided it was time to go... She died and needless to say the three men in her life were never the same. The laughter had gone but her boys were resilient and went on to become the professionals they wanted to be.
As for DB he too continued lost and lonely the three of them in different countries they remained a close family! Devastated...and hopeless...he was a true blue SWAN!
Then he met Noi, a Thai lady...three years into his unconsolable grief. Noi was 25 years younger but had had a bad marriage and had lost her kids to her former husband! He was happy!
This year after 16 years of living together DB decided to bring Noi to India to meet his family and that's when the fun started. Everyone knew about her and that they were "living-in" and could not be married due to some legalities! Noi was now 57 and DB was all 78 - his boys had small kids and were well-settled!
DB was still a slip of a man hardly 45 kilos and about 5''4 but still did yoga and remained ever popular and was the family joker. Noi looked like she was in her thirties and was well-groomed always. She looked young felt old but he felt young looked old. DB constantly enjoyed teasing his cousins of 60-65 years!
However, the family had by now been used to the phirangs many times over and now had several blond and freckled grand children in the new generation! The fact that Noi was young looking created a case of the green in the aunts of mine. So, not one of them remarked on how young their sis/cuz-in-law looked!
But that was just the beginning! They saw DB as a husband once more after 16 years and realised he is still a SWAN! He kept Noi as his queen he worshipped the ground she walked on - all her little whims were his commands! Then the family saw that Noi was actually quite challanged worldly-wise!
She was a great cook and housekeeper and loved soap operas and pretty things! DB is known as the most intelligent in the family - Yet he treated his wife as Stephen hawkins and hung on to every word from her mouth.
The women in the family who have suffered intelligent yet insensitive husbands for years were ruffled... This couple showed them clearly what horrible marriages they had!
Their men did not know any thing about pleasing a woman! The fights began all the wounds were re-opened ancient duels began once more...the misunderstandings of their early marital lives were suddenly fresh!
The men quiverred! What's happening to their peaceful existence being kings of their castles? Even the husbands in their seventies were being questioned about adultry! I watched as DB's 8-day-visit created more wars than ever in my family! Then something happened....
After dinner one day Noi got up and decided to go for a walk around the colony it was 11 PM and she was not fluent in English or the local language but hey she's 55 she's no baby for the rest of us! As the family cleared the table and the consumed bottles of single malt no one noticed that the time was midnight and Noi was not back!
Suddenly DB got up and yelled - Where is she? That's when everyone realised she was not home yet! Search parties went around the building I even inspected some brown drops in the lobby! She was kidnapped I thought, she looked young! DB and cousins and nephews and nieces all ran helter-skelter!
After 30 mins we found her climbing the stairs of the water tank building slowly lucidly and there we were with DB nearly having a heart attack! We were on the verge of calling the police and the whole family young and old were furious with Noi!
We all waited with glee, anxiously for DB's reaction to her and as she opened her eyes and saw us all standing in front of her, DB said something that diffused the building animosity in the family to their perfect coupling...
"Where were you sweety?" Tchah! He blew his one chance to bring her down from her high horse! There he was being dutiful and kind! Maybe they do deserve one another - the husbands and wives watching realised...
This kind of love was too much for my family to suffer and I'm sure I heard some one retch! Anyway, peace was restored in all homes that day!
